The end result is a cross-pollination between new and old warm and characteristic sounds that cover the whole range, from old school to modern, from dry to ambient. However, it appears that the audio for the 17' and 18' crashes are mixed up, in that the 18' cymbal is producing the sound of a 17', and vice versa. It was recorded in an empty Swedish theater and later mixed in a high-end studio through vintage and modern outboard gear. The crash cymbals on this plugin tend to be better than those on Toontracks EzDrummer, and infinitely better than the ones on Naughty Seals Perfect Drums. All that is playing on the track: kick, snare, and hi-hat. When I enter a whole note (4 beats) on the staff for the cymbal (Bb below middle C) and play the MIDI track, the cymbal is choked on the second beat. If I look at EZDrummer, it still triggers the same note for the crash/ride cymbal but instead sounds like the choke/mute.
However, once I do a choke, the sound gets stuck there. When I use the mouse to click the crash cymbal, I get nice sustain. I just found out that my alesis surge mesh kit gets its cymbal choke stuck in ezdrummer 2. All instruments were handpicked and in many cases road-worn by the sampling drummer himself, a blues musician with decades worth of experience behind the kit playing the blues. I just installed the Nashville kit for EZDrummer. Toontracks simplified version of their flagship DFH Superior offers fewer kits, but with the same sound quality and in a more user-friendly interface.
